Yellowstone NP, Day 6
We saved the best for our last day in Yellowstone National Park: geysers and springs. Walked the Upper Geyser Basin starting with Old Faithful (had to wait about 20 minutes for it to erupt). The sheer beauty of these features and the landscape defies description. Below are just a few of the many photos I took. The hike was on relatively flat trails that were mostly paved but it got hot as the day progressed. The different springs and geysers looked deceptively close, but we had to get on side trails then back out, hence the hike took a lot longer than expected.
After the long and hot hike to the Morning Glory Pool (photo above), we turned back and stopped at the iconic Old Faithful Inn. The interior was awe inspiring; we managed to get on the 3:30 pm free tour of the Inn.
Then we relaxed at the Bear Pit for beer (I had the Moose Drool and Debi ordered the Old Faithful Ale) and some snacks. The cheese, crackers and cold cuts came with traditional and huckleberry mustard, all very good.
On the way back to our campground, we decided to stop at the Fairy Falls trailhead to hike up the Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail. The trailhead parking lot was full; we managed to move into a spot as someone pulled out. This was supposed to be an easy 1.5 round trip hike with an elevation gain of 203 ft, but for me, it was tough after all the walking we have done today. Still, the view of the Grand Prismatic Spring was well worth the hike.
Below are two more photos from the day; a lone bison in the open field as well as the Continental Divide marker we passed on the way. This has been an amazing day! Tomorrow we head towards Grand Teton NP.
